Maria Saal

Just a few minutes’ drive from the Carinthian provincial capital Klagenfurt is Maria Saal. During the time of the Roman province Noricum, its capital Virunum stood here.

The stone dukes’ throne on which the dukes used to sit to take the oath after their coronation still stands here.

But probably the most important Gothic sacred building in Carinthia is also here in Maria Saal: the provostship and pilgrimage church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, Maria Saal Cathedral. This is a place of power and spiritual centre, which is also an important stage on the Hemma Pilgrimage Trail and the Maria Pilgrimage Trail.

Places of interest well worth visiting include the Tonhof culture centre, the Virunum amphitheatre and the Maria Saal open-air museum, which displays various forms of houses and farms.
