A Camping Holiday in Carinthia

Searching for the adventure called ‘life’, discovering magical places, sweeping through meadows and forests, appreciating great treasures in the small things, as only children can. All of us can associate a distinctive flavour with our childhoods along with special aromas that are unforgettable and that take us back again - into the great adventure that was. Be a kid again for the length of an entire holiday. In Carinthia, the land of mountains and lakes, a paradise for campers, you can find memories of childhood around every turn and enjoy the incomparable freedom and ease of childhood days at Carinthia’s camping grounds.

Comfort and a sense of well-being are plainly noticeable at the more than 100 camping grounds with 16,000 spaces. Everyone can find a favourite spot here, regardless of whether they are looking for a site at a bathing lake, at the foot of the Alps, on a romantic riverbank, on a farm or at one of the naturist camping grounds in Southern Carinthia, on Lake Millstätter See or on Lake Keutschacher See. Twenty camping grounds have been awarded the Carinthia Quality Seal. They create a very special atmosphere of well-being and community with a high quality of service.

In addition, many facilities offer comfortable holiday flats, fully-equipped caravans for hire and tasteful mobile homes as alternative options for accommodation. The Strandcamping Gruber am Faaker See and Seecamping Hoffmann am Ossiacher See lakeside camping grounds are amongst the facilities offering new mobile homes this year. You can find particularly high-quality rental accommodations at, for example, Camping Breznik am Turnersee (mobile homes), Seecamping Berghof am Ossiacher See (holiday homes with private saunas), Camping Brunner (holiday chalets) or Camping Schluga (modern flats, lavish spa area). This means that you don’t always have to use your own caravan to enjoy a holiday on a camping ground in Carinthia.

The mountain and lake scenery of Carinthia enchants recreational cyclists, mountain bikers and road cyclists alike.

There are more than enough opportunities for recreational cycling – alone, with friends or with the entire family; for example, visitors can cycle the Drava Cycle Path, which is sign-posted, divided into several stages and meanders for 222 kilometres through Carinthia along the state’s main river, the Drava. In 2016, the Drava Cycle Path received the coveted 5 stars of the General German Bicycle Club and is thus one of only four European cycle paths with this highest-possible distinction. Individual stages can be covered by train, boat or on the Drava Cycle Path bus; baggage transport is available by request.

The Alpe-Adria Cycle Path is no less attractive; it leads from Salzburg through Carinthia to the Upper Adria in several exciting stages. Info: www.alpe-adria-radweg.com
Mountain bikers can also find diverse routes amidst an unadulterated natural landscape. There are attractive trails, for example, in Nassfeld, on Lake Weissensee, on Petzen Mountain and in the Villach and Bad Kleinkirchheim regions. The mountain bike route network covers a total of 2,800 kilometres. The sunny south has countless beautiful tours available for road cyclists. Options include riding for several hours over relatively level terrain along the beautiful lakes and taking a tour on Austria’s highest mountain pass, the Grossglockner High Alpine Road.

But it isn’t only cyclists who get their money’s worth in Carinthia: well-signposted hiking paths located at all altitudes in the gentle holiday world of the Alps invite visitors to get moving and explore, from simple family hiking trails to challenging via ferrata routes. Hikers seeking the exceptional will find it on the Alpe-Adria Trail. The trail links three countries – Carinthia in Austria, Slovenia and Italy – in 43 stages of 20km each. www.alpe-adria-trail.com

Winter camping and caravaning

Schluga Wintercamping

Camping Schluga

Winter camping and caravaning in the south of Austria doesn’t leave skiers cold: with the home away from home on wheels to cross-country trails and ski slopes.

On a holiday in Carinthia in a caravan or mobile home you will really be able to explore nature to the full. Deer and rabbits in front of the window, fir trees as decoration for your front garden and every day a new snowman. It warms the hearts of big and small alike. Winter holidaymakers on a campsite can enjoy holidays in the privacy of their home, in natural surroundings on camping areas with an infrastructure that is in no way inferior to star-rated hotels. In Carinthia, Austria’s sunny south at the Italian and Slovenian borders, you will also find ski slopes, cross-country trails and winter walking paths directly at your caravan’s doorstep.

For years Carinthia has been proving itself as a true paradise for campers with 18 winter campsites, some of which have received multiple awards. Cross-country trails, winter walking paths, ski slopes and often also frozen lakes for ice skating are right on your doorstep; and sauna, massage and wellness areas are part of the service.

A campsite is a little world of its own – particularly in winter. The houses perch on wheels in the snow and children build igloos and snowmen. Behind brightly lit windows there’s a cosy home. Here the holidaymakers have a piece of home with them. Everything is at hand: tea is steaming hot on the cooker, a candle is burning and the fridge is well filled. Nobody has to trip over wet boots or damp ski wear: after the fun in the snow they are put in the campsite’s large drying room. The meals are only a few steps away – an inn is a matter of course at each campsite.

And even after an eventful day on the piste or a winter walk, that’s not all on the campsites: skittle alleys, saunas, solarium, massages, play rooms and trips offered for the whole family provide for a change and relaxation in front of your own door. Be it a group winter walk, entertainment in a mountain chalet or a toboggan ride – the campers in Carinthia are a close-knit community that is also open to “newcomers”. You will certainly not get cold feet during winter camping. This is not only ensured by the campsites that are equipped with every imaginable comfort, but also by the operators of the campsites themselves who are happy to take time for a glass of mulled wine or a chat. Hospitality is not a matter of the season in Carinthia.
